The Offset Project

"Our focus is to reduce carbon emissions by bringing communities in the Monterey area together, through education and grassroots initiatives"

About Us

The Offset Project (TOP) was formed as a 501-(c)3 non-profit community organization in 2007 on the Monterey Peninsula. TOP is an environmental organization creating programs that fulfill our mission to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through education and grassroots initiatives. We continually seek to integrate ways for the community to learn and interact and to guide businesses and special events toward carbon reduction strategies.

The Offset Project is a coalition of individuals who empower our communities to create change.  TOP works with local businesses and special events to establish sustainable policies and implement best practices in environmental stewardship. To date, TOP has received three green leadership awards from local business organizations.

Zero Waste Special Events

TOP works with event venues to guide sustainable purchasing; provide training in waste reduction strategies; and deliver necessary infrastructure, on-the-ground support, and documentation reports in order to achieve a zero-waste vision. TOP has developed waste strategies for 13 special events in the Monterey County area in accordance with AB939 and AB341. These strategies include managing relationships with franchise waste haulers and landfill agencies in city and county jurisdictions, monitoring and evaluating program success and making recommendations in accordance with applicable laws, regulations and policies, structuring grant money to promote compliance and public education and to source grants opportunities to pull resources together. In addition, TOP participates in the Integrated Waste Task Force Committee and am familiar with industry regulations and long term compliance legislation.

TOP Down Consulting

The Offset Project provides an on-the-ground approach to corporate responsibility that is both realistic and sustainable for businesses. We work with clients to understand their objectives and to implement their sustainability policies. We are currently working with Bernardus Lodge, Natividad Medical Center and Pebble Beach Company on building solutions for waste diversion.

Monterey Bay Carbon Fund

Launched in April 2010, the Monterey Bay Carbon Fund (MBCF) is a nonprofit fund that directs money into local renewable energy projects at Monterey Bay schools and nonprofits and/or other local GHG emission reduction projects approved by The Offset Project and Monterey Bay Regional Climate Action Compact. The main premise of the MBCF is to provide a program that benefits the Monterey Bay community by 1) reducing local GHG emissions, 2) accelerating the adoption of renewable energy technology, 3) creating jobs and new educational opportunities in the renewable energy field, and 4) keeping local dollars spent on various types of offsets in Monterey Bay community. MBCF raises funds by buying and selling certified products and recieving community donations and grants.
